1. Heritance Kandalama – Seamless Architecture & Jungle Aesthetics

Designed by the legendary Geoffrey Bawa, Heritance Kandalama, a five-star hotel in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, is a masterpiece of tropical modernism. The way this hotel merges with the surrounding jungle; using raw concrete, massive glass panels, and open corridors; left a lasting impression on me. It taught me the beauty of unobstructed views and the importance of sustainable design. The muted color palette of deep greens, grays, and earthy browns is something I now find myself drawn to when curating spaces that evoke serenity and a connection to nature. A notable design piece at the hotel was the massive rock that jutted through the lobby, making nature a key part of the architectural design and inspiring me to incorporate natural elements into my interiors.

Its use of marble, gold accents, and plush furnishings reflected timeless elegance. The high ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and sophisticated symmetry reminded me of how luxury can be achieved through classic elements. The combination of rich textures and a neutral palette with occasional bold highlights gave me new ideas on balancing opulence with contemporary design. One specific piece that stood out was the grand staircase with its intricate balustrades, which captured the hotel’s blend of luxury and artistry, inspiring me to incorporate bold architectural features into my own designs.

3. The Elephant Corridor, Sigiriya – Rustic Minimalism & Nature-Inspired Design

Nestled near the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya, The Elephant Corridor a five-star hotel; offered a completely different experience; one where luxury met tranquility in the most organic way. Inspired by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, the resort’s open-air concept, earthy tones, and sustainable materials spoke to me deeply. Its design embraced nature rather than competing with it, using wood, stone, and terracotta in their raw forms. Sri Lankan Vernacular Architecture – Elements like traditional timber structures, intricate carvings, and colonial influences are incorporated into the modern setting. This stay reaffirmed my belief that minimalism doesn’t mean sacrificing warmth, but rather enhancing it through natural textures and seamless indoor-outdoor transitions. A piece that truly captured the essence of this design was the outdoor wooden daybeds, which allowed guests to experience nature while being surrounded by comfort.

The hotel gets its name from its location within a natural elephant migration route, where wild elephants roam freely between national parks. Rather than disrupting their habitat, the architecture is designed to coexist with these majestic creatures, allowing guests to witness them in their natural element. Imagine waking up to the sight of elephants strolling by it’s luxury, but with nature taking center stage. This harmony between wildlife and luxury is what makes The Elephant Corridor a truly unique retreat.

One of my most memorable experiences was showering while monkeys playfully moved above us on the glass ceiling, reminding me just how beautifully nature can be incorporated into a space. This moment deepened my appreciation for spaces that blur the lines between the indoors and the outdoors.

4. Cinnamon Citadel, Kandy – Rich Textiles & Cultural Accents

Perched along the Mahaweli River, Cinnamon Citadel, a five-star hotel in Kandy, exuded warmth through its deep reds, carved wooden furniture, and cultural motifs. Everything was infused with the warm, spicy aroma of cinnamon, making it not just a visually stunning place but an olfactory experience as well. The hotel’s ability to fully embrace and immerse guests in a single theme inspired me to think about how scent can be a powerful design element, creating a mood and enhancing the overall atmosphere of a space.

5. The Grand Hotel, Nuwara Eliya – Colonial Charm & Vintage Inspirations

Stepping into The Grand Hotel, a five-star hotel in Nuwara Eliya, felt like stepping back in time. With its British colonial heritage, this hotel embodied vintage charm through floral wallpapers, antique wooden furniture, and an abundance of cozy fireplaces. What struck me most was the perfect harmony between nostalgia and modern comfort. It reminded me how vintage elements; whether in furniture, color palettes, or decorative details; can bring character and soul into a space while still feeling fresh and inviting. One specific design feature that caught my eye was the grand piano in the lobby, which brought an air of sophistication and timeless elegance, inspiring me to incorporate classic, vintage pieces into my interiors. I can still remember the old windows and the antique furniture in the rooms, each piece telling its own story of a bygone era. The entire atmosphere felt like a step into history, where every corner exuded nostalgia. This blend of history and decor encouraged me to consider how such timeless elements can bring soul to modern spaces, blending the old and new harmoniously.

What made it even more special was the live piano music that filled the hotel’s common areas in the evening, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere. This fusion of music, history, and decor encouraged me to think about how the right ambiance can elevate a space, creating not just a look but a full sensory experience.
